Supermassive to cut staff by 90

Original story, February 26, 2024: Supermassive Games is poised to lay off approximately 90 employees from the company.

As reported by Bloomberg, per an internal email, The Dark Anthologies Picture maker informed 150 staffers that they are at risk of being cut.

A Supermassive representative said it is “entering into a period of consultation, which we anticipate will result in the loss of some of our colleagues.”

Per UK labor laws, an employer must give prior notice before mass layoffs.

The news comes weeks after Supermassive founders, Pete Samuels and Joe Samuels, stepped down from their roles at the studio.

Last month, it was reported that Supermassive’s Until Dawn was greenlighted for a movie adaptation.

Update, February 27, 2024: Supermassive Games has issued a statement on X following the report of layoffs at the studio.

“It’s no secret that the games industry is currently facing significant challenges, and unfortunately we aren’t immune to this,” it wrote.

“After much deliberation and with deep regret, we are therefore undertaking a reorganisation of Supermassive Games. As a result, we are entering a period of consultation, which we anticipate will result in the loss of some of our colleagues. This is not a decision that’s been taken lightly, with many efforts made to avoid this outcome.

“We are all too aware of how unsettling and difficult this process is going to be for all our employees and will be working closely with all those involved to ensure the process is conducted as respectfully and compassionately as possible.”

It added: “We’re committed to focusing our efforts on our core strengths and upcoming titles to ensure the continued sustainability of the company.”
