Square Enix has called Forspoken's sales lackluster

Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix has described the sales for Forspoken as lackluster.

The comment came from company president Yosuke Matsuda, who will be stepping down from the role, in a financial results briefing session for the firm.

He said, “Reviews of [Forspoken], which we released on January 24, 2023, have been challenging.”

“However, the game has also received positive feedback on its action features, including its parkour and combat capabilities, so it has yielded results that will lead to improvement of our development capabilities of other games in the future.”

The title received a mixed reception as some critics enjoyed its narrative, but others voiced concern over the writing of its Black heroine.

On February 28, Forspoken’s developer, Luminous Productions, announced that on May 1, it will be folded into Square Enix.

Before the merger, the studio operated as an independent subsidiary.
