Vox Media fires 39 staffers across company due to economic uncertainty

Vox Media has laid off 39 staffers across the company due to economic uncertainty.

As reported by Variety, the media company’s cuts included departments suchs as recruiting, sales, and publications such as games website Polygon.

In a memo obtained by Variety, Vox Media chief Jim Bankoff said that the decision to cut staff was caused by supply-chain issues reducing budgets for marketing and advertising.

“Our aim is to get ahead of greater uncertainty by making difficult but important decisions to pare back on initiatives that are lower priority or have lower staffing needs in the current climate,” Bankoff explained.

The media company’s brand slate includes Curbed, The Cut, The Dodo, Eater, Grub Street, Intelligencer, and New York Magazine.

Its publications also include NowThis, Polygon, Popsugar, Recode, SB Nation, Seeker, The Strategist, Thrillist, The Verge, Vox and Vulture.

The layoffs at Vox Media follow seven months after it merged with digital media company Group Nine Media.
