ByteDance reportedly laid off hundreds of staff in China at the end of the 2022, affecting employees in its games branch among others.

According to sources who talked to the South China Morning Post, the redundancies impacted TikTok’s Chinese version, Douyin, as well as its gaming and real estate businesses.

Chinese publication Jiemian reported that collaboration platform Lark (known as Feishu in China) saw 10% of its workforce cut as part of the layoffs.

The exact number of employees who have been laid off has not been revealed. The South China Morning Post said those affected will be compensated based on seniority, plus one month’s salary.

It also noted that the company is currently hiring en masse, with over 10,000 job openings listed on its website at the time of writing.

ByteDance had already laid off hundreds of staff from its video games operations in September 2022, as it announced that it was “aggressively downsizing.”
